National Level Faculty Development Program on Opportunities in Geospatial Technologies :
National Level FDP on Opportunities in Open Source Geospatial Technologies:
National Level Faculty Development Program on Opportunities in Open Source Geospatial Technologies by FOSSEE-GIS” and the “Launch of IITB FOSSEE Geospatial Mapathon & GIS-IoT Hackathon websites” were conducted on May 13, 2024. The event was attended by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary DST, Prof. Shirish Kedare, Director IIT Bombay, and Vice Chancellors of two prominent universities (I.e.) Prof. Kale of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Raigad, Maharashtra, and Dr. Nazir, from Sher-e-Kashmir Agricultural University of Science and Technology, Srinagar to join us along with dignities from our partner organizations IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation, Survey of India, ICFOSS, Delhi Technological University. More than 50 faculty members attended the event.
FOSSEE-GIS promotes the usage of GIS/Geospatial-based FOSS in academia and industry. There are more than 30+ skill-oriented, research-focused, and job-based ‘Open Source GIS’ initiatives ranging from foundational activities (FDP, NEP2020 Curriculum inclusion, etc) to industry-academia connect till job-fair and entrepreneurship that FOSSEE-GIS organizes, nationally. Currently, the FOSSEE-GIS team is actively engaged with 1000+ UGC/AICTE/ Central/ State Government recognized Institutions across India. For this year, the FOSSEE-GIS team has decided to focus on themes linked to 'hydrology’, ‘Climate’, ‘Nutrition’, ; Green Energy and Sustainability’, ‘Rural Development’, ‘Urban Planning’, ‘Transportation and Logistics’, ‘Disaster Management and Environment’, ‘Mountain Ecosystem and Economics, etc. The FOSSEE-GIS team mandates the adherence of the National Geospatial Policy 2022, Indian Space Policy 2023, usage of Open Source Software, selection of Indian study area, etc as the mandates for anyone who would like to participate in all initiatives.
Open Hardware-IoT Geospatial Hackathon:
The National Level Open Hardware-IoT Geospatial Hackathon was a premier event that brought together visionaries, tech enthusiasts, and problem solvers from across the nation to harness the power of open hardware, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Geospatial technology. This was a stage where innovation knew no boundaries. The technical partner for this event was the Rural Data Research and Analysis (RuDRA) Lab at IIT Bombay which is India's first HPC-powered data center dedicated to Rural Development. The co organisers were IITTNiF (NM-ICPS, DST, Government of India) & ICFOSS (Government of Kerala). A set of problem statements were given to the participants. The winners were announced on 11 November 2024, on National Education Day. 22 teams qualified in the final round and one was awarded as the champion. The details of the hackathon can be viewed here: https://iot-gis-hackathon.fossee.in.
Meet & Greet session for DWSIM:
The FOSSEE Project conducts awareness sessions called Meet & Greet, for faculty members of various institutes to get familiarise with the software promoted by the FOSSEE project. On 12 April 2024, such a session was conducted for DWSIM, in the online mode. The experts from the FOSSEE team talked about the software and ways in which students and faculty members can participate in FOSSEE activities. The contributions are released in open source and serve as a good documentation for the software. More than 80 faculty members attended the event both from India and abroad. We have identified some faculty members who are interested in using DWSIM in their institutes. We are following up with them.
Workshop on Arduino on Cloud:
This workshop was conducted for students of Shri L R Tiwari College of Engineering. There were more than 100 students from the Electronics and Communications stream who attended the workshop. Arduino on Cloud bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application by enabling cloud-based programming and simulation of Arduino devices. This workshop was conducted in the college premises on 18 March 2024.
Animate 2024:
India is known for its creativity and resourcefulness, with innovation happening everywhere, from busy cities to quiet villages. To highlight and celebrate India's innovative spirit the theme for Animate 2024 was “Celebrating India's Innovation”. The participants had to showcase a problem, the action taken, and the innovative solution presented.
Workshop on the basics of OpenFOAM, OpenModelica and DWSIM:
Tackling Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer Problems using OpenFOAM:
FOSSEE, IIT Bombay, organized a six-day online workshop on Tackling Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer Problems using OpenFOAM. The workshop comprised of theory and demonstation sessions. Participants found it extremely useful for their academics and career. The topics covered were as follows:
- fundamentals of CFD using OpenFOAM
- simulate problem in OpenFOAM
- create your own solver
- essentials of post-processing
Workshop on CircuitJS:
This workshop was conducted for more than 60 students of BSc (Electronics, Physics) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMDVU), Katra. CircuitJS is an interactive platform for simulating electronic circuits. It can simulate a range of circuits from basic Ohm's Law experiments to advanced digital systems. Its versatility makes it highly beneficial for students in BSc (Electronics, Physics) courses, polytechnics, and engineering divisions, allowing them to visualize and experiment with circuits without the need for physical hardware. This workshop was conducted in online mode on 19 January 2024.
"Arduino for Physics Experiments" :
A two day workshop on Arduino for Physics Experiments was conducted for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, by the Hardware team of the FOSSEE project. For this workshop the Arduino on Cloud platform was used. This platform bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application by enabling cloud-based programming and simulation of Arduino devices. The workshop was attended by around 60 students from B.Sc. (Electronics and Physics). This workshop was conducted on online mode on 18 January 2024.
